Jika ditanya pada tahun 2004 apa mimpi saya, maka saya akan menjawab ingin mengunjungi Kota New York yang terkenal sebagai salah satu Kota Yang Tidak Pernah Tidur.

Ini bermula dari panggilan saya yang oleh Saudara Akbar Zainuri diganti menjadi EnWai mengingat nama Yangki hampir sama dengan Yankee atau yang dalam bahasa Indonesia berarti Orang Amerika. Sedangkan Akbar memanggil EnWai karena Yankee lebih dekat dengan istilah New York Yankees atau EnWai Yankees (tim baseball kebanggan Kota New York).

Bermula dari situ saya bermimpi untuk menginjakkan kaki di kota yang juga biasa dipanggil dengan nama Big Apple tersebut. Pada tahun 2007, saya terpilih menjadi salah satu delegasi Universitas Padjadjaran di acara bergengsi Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) yang diadakan oleh Harvard University. Mengingat Harvard University adalah salah satu universitas peringkat atas dunia serta termasuk ke dalam jajaran Ivy League University, pastinya acara ini juga adalah acara yang sangat bagus mengingat pada tahun tersebut, HNMUN adalah kali ke-54 nya diadakan.

Akhirnya pada bulan Februari 2008, mimpi 4 tahun yang lalu menjadi sebuah kenyataan. Saya berhasil menginjakkan kaki di Kota New York setelah 2 minggu sebelumnya mengikuti acara HNMUN di Kota Boston yang sangat terkenal dengan Boston Tea Party-nya (ini tertulis di buku sejarah yang dahulu dipelajari ketika duduk di bangku SMP).

Tidak hanya menghabiskan waktu mengunjungi tempat-tempat menarik di Kota New York seperti Times Square, Wall Street, Patung Liberty, Central Park dan sebagainya, seluruh delegasi Indonesia yang ikut di acara HNMUN (Unpad, ITB, SBM-ITB, UI, UGM dan Unpar) mendapatkan undangan jamuan makan siang langsung dari Bapak Marty Natalegawa yang waktu itu menjabat sebagai Wakil Tetap Republik Indonesia untuk PBB di Kantor Konsulat Jenderal Republik Indonesia.

Pada akhirnya, saya mengambil kesimpulan bahwa mimpi adalah salah satu alasan untuk kita tetap hidup karena selama ada mimpi, kita akan terus termotivasi untuk mewujudkan mimpi-mimpi tersebut. Kita hidup karena mimpi, dan kita bermimpi karena kita terus ingin hidup.

Negara Yang Terancam Hilang: Tuvalu

Stand With Tuvalu (Oxfam International)

Tulisan ini adalah bagian dari serial tulisan tentang negara yang terancam hilang akibat pemanasan global yang mengakibatkan naiknya permukaan air laut. Negara yang direview di keseluruhan tulisan ini adalah negara yang tergabung dalam AOSIS (Alliance of Small Island States) yang merupakan salah satu organisasi antar pemerintah (Intergovernmental Association) dari dataran rendah pesisir (low-lying coastal) dan negara kepualaun kecil (small island countries). AOSIS didirikan pada tahun 1990, tujuan utama dari aliansi ini adalah untuk mengkonsolidasikan suara Small Island Developing States (SIDS) untuk mengatasi pemanasan global. AOSIS memiliki 42 anggota dan observer dari seluruh dunia, dimana 37 merupakan anggota PBB. Aliansi tersebut merupakan 28% dari negara-negara berkembang dan 20% dari total keanggotaan's PBB.

Tuvalu
Saya pertama kali mendengar nama Tuvalu ketika mengikuti acara Konferensi Perubahan Iklim COP15 di Copenhagen, Denmark pada bulan Desember 2009. Pada konferensi tersebut, delegasi Tuvalu adalah salah satu delegasi yang paling bersuara keras terutama di tanggal 10 Desember 2009 ketika delegasi Tuvalu menuntut kenaikan suhu global harus dibatasi pada 1.5 derajat bukannya 2 derajat seperti yang diusulkan.

"Tuvalu is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change, and our future rests on the outcome of this meeting." --Ian Fry, Tuvalu's negotiator in COP15 Climate Conference.

Tuvalu juga terkenal dengan nama Ellice Islands, Tuvalu sendiri berarti "delapan pulau yang berdiri bersama" dalam Bahasa Tuvalu karena negara ini terdiri dari 8 pulau yang terletak di Samudra Pasifik. Tuvalu dikelilingi oleh negara Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa dan Fiji dan berdasarkan perkiraan julah penduduk Juli 2010, Tuvalu dihuni sebanyak 10,472 orang (CIA World Fact Book) dan menjadikan Tuvalu sebagai negara dengan populasi penduduk terkecil ketiga di dunia setelah Vatican City dan Nauru. Tuvalu sendiri hanya memiliki luas 26 km persegi atau hanya 3% dari luas Jakarta dan jika dihitung dari luas daratannya saja, luas Tuvalu kurang dari 1% luas Jakarta. Kita bisa membayangkan bagaimana "menariknya" tinggal di Tuvalu.

Saya sendiri belum pernah menginjakkan kaki di Tuvalu tetapi pernah bertemu dengan Gilliane Le Gallic yang merupakan pendiri dari organisasi Alofa Tuvalu. Gilliane mulai mendirikan organisasi ini setelah beberapa saat tinggal di Tuvalu dan merasakan kecintaanya akan negara kecil ini. Giliane bercerita bahwa Tuvalu adalah sebuah negara yang indah alamnya dan disamping itu, Tuvalu juga negara yang terancam akan dampak dari perubahan iklim. Adalah hal yang biasa ketika badai menerpa negara ini, air yang keluar dari tanah seperti yang dialami oleh daerah Sidoarjo dimana di Sidoarjo lumpur yang keluar dari tanah. Yang paling menarik mendengar tentang Tuvalu adalah ketika kita tidur dimanapun di daerah Tuvalu, maka deburan ombak akan menjadi musik penghibur di malam hari.

Ancaman terbesar bukanlah bencana alam yang menerpa Tuvalu, tetapi ancaman terbesar yang sedang dihadapi oleh Tuvalu adalah tenggelamnya negara ini. Titik tertinggi di Tuvalu hanya sekitar 4.5 meter (15 kaki), ini berarti jika air laut naik 40 cm setiap tahunnya, maka dalam 100 tahun lagi Tuvalu akan hilang dari muka bumi atau jika air laut naik 80 cm setiap tahunnya, maka dalam 50 tahun lagi Tuvalu hanya akan tinggal sebuah nama.

The threat is real and serious, and is of no difference to a slow and insidious form of terrorism against us." --Saufatu Sopoanga, Prime Minister of Tuvalu, at the 58th Session of the United Nations General Assembly New York, 24th September 2003.

Jika dalam jangka waktu 50 hingga 100 tahun ke depan kita terus membiarkan terjadinya perubahan iklim yang mengakibatkan naiknya permukaan air laut, maka Tuvalu bukan hanya satu-satunya negara yang terancam akan hilang dari muka bumi. Indonesia sendiri sebagai negara kepulauan yang memiliki lebih dari 17,000 pulau pasti juga akan terkena dampaknya. Jika Tuvalu hilang ini berarti air laut naik sebesar 4 meter, kita dapat menghitung berapa banyak kehidupan di pinggir pantai/laut yang akan hilang di kota-kota pinggir pantai Indonesia karena kebanyakan kota besar Indonesia berada di pinggir pantai, sebut saja Jakarta, Surabaya, Semarang, Padang, Makassar.

Untuk kedua kalinya, saya mendapatkan kesempatan untuk datang ke Amerika Serikat dan kali ini untuk kuliah tentang energi dan lingkungan di Amherst, MA dari tanggal 3 September hingga tanggal 9 Oktober 2010.

Sedikit informasi seputar Amherst: kota kecil di negara bagian Massachusetts dimana penduduknya sekitar 34ribu orang dan hampir 50% adalah mahasiswa karena di Amherst terdapat 5 college (setingkat universitas) yaitunya; University of Massachusetts (UMass), Amherst College, Mount Holyoke, Smith College dan Hampshire College.

What is Youth Tiger Summit?

World leaders will meet at the heads of government World Tiger Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia from 15-18 September 2010 to lay out agenda for the recovery of tiger population throughout their range. As part of the Summit process during this Year of the Tiger 2010, WWF is organizing a Youth Summit to reach out to the youths of the world so they can have a voice in this important conservation effort of this endangered species.

Young people – Youth Tiger Ambassadors (age 18 to 20) from tiger range countries and countries that support the conservation of tigers – are invited to Vladivostok, home to the Amur or Siberian tiger, in Russia Far East for a for a Youth Summit from 12-18 September 2010. The Summit will provide them with the opportunity to learn more about tiger conservation along with their fellow youths from other countries and discuss ideas on raising awareness of the tiger. They will visit the habitat of the Amur or Siberian tiger, be taken on a tiger trail, and get first-hand information about the state of the wild tiger population and necessary measures for their conservation measures.

At present tiger populations are plummeting rapidly, driven by massive forests destruction, lost of natural prey species, poaching and illegal trading. The global wild population may now be as low as 3,200, down from an estimated 100,000 at the beginning 20th century . In Indonesia, only about 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild and they are struggling to survive.

WWF is inviting two delegates from each of the tiger range countries and those countries with no tigers of their own but are helping to save the tiger, to attend the Youth Tiger Summit. WWF-Indonesia is inviting two talented- creative youths to the summit as the ambassadors of Sumatran tiger conservation efforts.

Alhamdulillah telah selesai pemilihan ketua baru HIMA IESP Unpad periode 2010-2011 dan serah terima jabatan telah dilangsungkan pada hari Senin, 17 Mei 2010 dengan demikian berakhir pula kepengurusan tahun 2009-2010.

Yangki sebagai Pelaksana Tugas Ketua dan atas nama Pengurus HIMA IESP UNPAD Periode 2009-2010 mengucapkan terima kasih kepada semua pihak yang tidak dapat disebutkan satu persatu atas masukan, saran serta kritikan yang kami gunakan sebagai dorongan untuk memberikan yang terbaik bagi masyarakat IESP Unpad.

Program kerja yang diagendakan di acara musyawarah kerja seperti National Debate Competition/National Economics Seminar (NDC/NES), Social Day 2010, Kajian, Road to be a Teaching Assistant (RTTA), Studi Banding, serta program rutin lainnya dapat kami laksanakan.

Kami menyadari bahwa masih banyak pembelajaran yang harus kami lakukan, masih banyak kekurangan yang harus kami perbaiki serta masih banyak peluang untuk menjadikan HIMA sebagai tempat bagi mahasiswa untuk belajar berorganisasi.

Public Discussion on Environment and Cimate Change with Ms. Otero

Yesterday I got invitation from US Embassy Jakarta to attend Public Discussion on Environment/Climate Change with the Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs, Ms. Maria Otero. Go to Jakarta from Bandung used X-Trans Travel and meet with Lidwina "Cea" Marcella one of friends from Danamon Young Leaders Award 2009 in PBNU Headquarter. Together with Lidwina Marcella (LSPR), Jonathan Christian Susanto (LSPR) and Olivia D. Purba (UI).

In this discussion, Ms. Otero stated that youth all over the world have 3 biggest responsibilities;

To Learn

Everyone can learn from newspaper, magazine and even internet. Learn from what your country faces, what other countries around you faces and also global problem.

To Find Solutions

From all over problems, we have to find solutions. Don't just criticize but made some suggestion. After we learn, we'll know the way to find solutions.

To Act

And the last one is to act based on the way that we think and based on our knowledge and based on solutions that we have and we got.

I got a chance to ask Ms. Otero about Climate Change issue so my question is "After COP15, USA commit their emission reduction only for 17% based year 2005. I was one of International Youth Delegation to this conference and we also discussed with other youth all over the world that USA should reduce their emissions 30% based year 1995. So, why USA only commit to 17% emission reduction?"

Ms. Otero answered it that "Emission reduction need to be implemented with some regulation to make sure that we achieve our target. Thats why we only set 17%".

To conclude the discussion, Ms. Otero said "From all over problems that we faced, we are part of the solutions".

Forest Friends Indonesian Finalist from WWF-Indonesia

Forest Friends atau Sahabat Hutan adalah inisiatif kampanye pelestarian hutan dan lingkungan yang ditargetkan kepada pemuda usia 18 sd 25 tahun melalui aplikasi “online” atau jejaring pertemanan. Inisiatif ini diharapkan dapat menumbuhkan ide-ide kreatif dan inovatif di kalangan pemuda dalam mempromosikan, menggerakkan, dan menginspirasi orang lain disekitarnya untuk melakukan aksi nyata bagi hutan dan lingkungan hidup.

Setelah melewati proses pendaftaran dan seleksi yang diadakan oleh dewan juri yaitunya;

Tulisan ini adalah bagian dari tulisan untuk kompetisi blog Kompetiblog Studi di Belanda 2010 yang diadakan oleh Nuffic Neso Indonesia dengan tema “Dutch innovation, in my opinion”.

Berbicara tentang Belanda, kita tidak akan pernah melupakan inovasi-inovasi unik yang kemudian menjadi simbol dari berbagai seni dan arsitektur dunia. Beberapa tulisan sebelumnya di kategori Peserta Kompetiblog Studi di Belanda 2010 memfokuskan tulisan di bidang arsitektur dan juga bidang yang berhubungan dengan lingkungan khususnya tentang air.

Di tulisan ini, penulis akan membahas tentang inovasi yang dilakukan oleh sebuah kota yang bernama Rotterdam.

Rotterdam adalah kota yang terletak di bagian barat Belanda dan termasuk ke dalam provinsi Zuid Holland [1]. Rotterdam termasuk kota kedua terbesar di Belanda setelah Amsterdam dimana berdasarkan data penduduk tahun 2008, Rotterdam memiliki penduduk sebanyak 589,615 orang sedangkan Amsterdam memiliki penduduk sebanyak 762,057 orang [2].

Wilayah negara Belanda, 55% nya berada di bawah permukaan laut. Titik terendah di Belanda terletak di sebelah timur pusat Kota Rotterdam dimana mencapai sekitar 7cm di bawah laut dan daerah dataran rendah itu dilindungi oleh tanggul untuk menghadang naiknya air ke dalamnya. Hal ini membuat Kota Rotterdam sangat sensitif terhadap badai, banjir dan kenaikan air laut.

Untuk melindungi kota dari kenaikan permukaan air laut dan banjir, pada akhir tahun 1990-an pemerintah kota membangun Maeslantkering, yaitunya dua gerbang besar yang bisa dibuka tutup dengan total panjangnya 600 meter dan ukurannya sebesar Menara Eifel. Ini merupakan salah satu rekor sturuktur bergerak terbesar di Bumi. Berikut gambar bergeraknya yang menggambarkan proses buka tutup Maeslantkering.

Setelah selesai dibangun, gambar berikut ini menggambarkan bagaimana Maeslantkering ketika sedang dibuka dan ketika sedang ditutup.

Dengan biaya pembangunan mencapai US$ 700 juta untuk satu bagiannya, atau totalnya mencapai US$ 1,400 juta dan seperti yang ditulis di atas, bahwa besarnya mencapai sebesar Menara Eifel. Berikut gambar rangkanya.

Maeslantkering akan menutup secara otomatis ketika tingkat air diperkirakan naik sekitar tiga meter di atas normal. Berdasarkan perkiraan dan deteksi para ahli air Belanda, ini akan terjadi setiap 10 tahun sekali dan setelah tahun 2050 akan terjadi setiap lima tahun sekali.

Untuk pertama kalinya semenjak dibangun, Maeslantkering resmi ditutup untuk pertama kalinya di bulan November 2007 ketika terjadi banjir yang secara otomatis membuat Maeslantkering menutup kota Rotterdam dari ancaman banjir.

Dengan titik terendah mencapai 6.76 meter dibawah permukaan air laut, tentunya Kota Rotterdam (seharusnya) tenggelam. Tetapi dengan biaya yang mencapai 1,400 juta dolar kita pastinya akan bertanya-tanya kenapa tidak pemerintah kota (membiarkan) kota Rotterdam tenggelam?

Ini tentunya karena pertimbangan ekonomi yang membuat pemerintah tetap mempertahankan Rotterdam. Rotterdam dikenal sebagai salah satu pelabuhan terbesar dan tersibuk di Eropa dan Dunia. Pada tahun 2003, Singapura dan tahun 2005 Sanghai merebut posisi sebagai pelabuhan tersibuk di dunia. Rotterdam, kota yang (seharusnya) tenggelam. Hari ini Rotterdam secara ekonomi merupakan kota pelabuhan terbesar di Eropa dari tahun 1962 dan salah satu yang tersibuk di dunia [5].

Pohon-Pohon Besar Itu Mengajarkan Kami Makna Pembangunan

Tulisan ini adalah bagian dari tulisan untuk kompetisi blog Kompetiblog Studi di Belanda 2010 yang diadakan oleh Nuffic Neso Indonesia dengan tema “Dutch innovation, in my opinion”.

Berbicara tentang Bandung, kita akan mengingat bahwa Bandung adalah salah satu ibukota dari provinsi yang tidak berada di dekat pantai. Bandung yang merupakan ibukota Jawa Barat memang terletak di daerah pegunungan (dataran tinggi).

Bandung secara sejarah menyimpan banyak memori akan perjuangan Indonesia. Sukarno, presiden pertama Indonesia merupakan lulusan dari Technische Hoogeschool, sekarang Institut Teknologi Bandung, berdasarkan catatan sejarah, Bandung juga menjadi ajang pertempuran di masa perang kemerdekaan, dan satu hal yang pasti menjadi tempat berlangsungnya Konferensi Asia-Afrika (KAA) pada tahun 1955.

Berdasarkan data dari City Population, Bandung memiliki penduduk terbesar ketiga di kota-kota besar di Indonesia setelah Jakarta dan Surabaya.[1] Dengan populasi sebanyak 2.3 juta penduduk maka muncullah beragam masalah yang memang menjadi tantangan bagi pemerintah kota yang dipimpin oleh Bapak Dada Rosada.

Satu masalah yang sekarang ini sedang melanda Bandung adalah bencana banjir terutama daerah Bandung Selatan. Bukankah ini merupakan suatu hal yang harus kita pertanyakan karena secara geografis, Bandung terletak di daerah dataran tinggi. Jika merunut kepada satu iklan yang dulu sempat gencar di televisi, maka saya mencoba untuk mengganti kata-katanya menjadi "Kalau Bandung kebanjiran, berarti Jakarta tenggelam?".

Ada hal yang salah dengan tata ruang kota yang bisa mengakibatkan terjadinya banjir di dataran tinggi.

Sekarang kita kembali melakukan kajian ulang mengenai bencana ini. Pada suatu kesempatan, penulis pernah melakukan tanya jawab dengan beberapa penduduk kota Bandung, beberapa dosen dan juga teman-teman mahasiswa tentang perbandingan kondisi Bandung dahulu dan sekarang.

Tulisan ini akan coba memfokuskan pembahasan di Bandung Utara khususunya Dago. Berdasarkan tata ruang kota, Bandung Utara pada zaman Belanda dahulunya merupakan tempat untuk bermukimnya para perwira-perwira dan pejabat pemerintahan. Berikut ini merupakan denah dari kawasan Dago dimana kita bisa melihat begitu bagusnya rencana pembangunan kawasan ini.

Satu hal yang selalu akan kita ingat ketika kita berada di Dago adalah banyaknya pohon-pohon besar yang masih kokoh di tepi jalan di hampir semua pelosok Dago. Salah satu dosen FE UNPAD, Pak Kurniawan mengatakan dalam wawancara yang penulis lakukan bahwa dahulu ketika beliau masih menjadi mahasiswa, setiap pagi rasanya "wajib" memakai jaket karena dinginnya hari. Sedangkan sekarang ini, Bandung termasuk kota dengan kenaikan suhu yang lumayan tinggi sehingga hampir setiap hari selalu panas.

Sedangkan teman-teman mahasiswa lainnya pernah mengatakan bahwa dahulunya Dago dipenuhi oleh pohon-pohon yang sampai saat ini pun masih ada. Ini adalah satu hal yang menarik untuk kita pelajari karena pohon-pohon tersebut ditanam ketika Belanda masih berada di Indonesia dan itu memiliki dampak jangka panjang (long term effect). Konsep pembangunan yang berkesinambungan dan berkelanjutan dengan memperhatikan aspek lingkungan dan alam adalah suatu kewajiban dalam setiap langkah pembangunan yang dilakukan oleh Belanda.

Mungkin kita sudah bosan mendengar bencana banjir yang terus melanda hampir pelosok nusantara, begitu juga dengan Bandung. Dalam 2 minggu kemaren, Kompas edisi Jawa Barat selalu memberitakan banjir yang melanda pelosok Jawa Barat dan Bandung bagian selatan. Dalam satu tulisan di Kompas, ditulis bahwa "Pembangunan di Bandung utara, membawa dampak negatif terhadap daerah di Bandung selatan". Hal ini karena tidak adanya konsep pembangunan yang ramah lingkungan serta konsep tata ruang kota yang boleh dikatakan tidak tertata dengan rapi sesuai dengan kondisi lingkungan yang ada di Bandung.

Bandung utara yang dahulunya tempat bermukim sekarang menjadi kawasan kuliner dan tempat belanja. Dimana hal ini mengorbankan salah satu warisan yang begitu berharga bagi lingkungan yaitunya ditebangnya pohon-pohon besar yang selama ini menjadi penyambung nyawa bagi kehidupan masyarakat kota. Berikut ini gambar yang memperlihatkan Dago yang diambil dari jembatan penyeberangan di depan SMA 1 Bandung. Memang masih ada pohon-pohon tetapi ini lebih sedikit dibandingkan dengan 5 tahun sebelumnya.

Dalam proses pembangunan, konsep keberlangsungan harus kita utamakan karena alam dengan tidak kita sadari membutuhkan watu yang lama untuk kembali menjadi seperti dulu. Alam membutuhkan tanggung jawab kita sebagai masyarakat untuk terus menjaga keberlangsungan. Pada akhirnya, kita seharusnya bangga karena dahulu bangsa ini berhasil memikirkan dan melakukan sesuatu untuk jangka panjang. Sekarang saatnya kita untuk berbenah dan kemudian melanjutkan pembangunan dengan tetap berpegang pada konsep pembangunan yang berkesinambungan dan berkelanjutan (sustainable & sustainability development).

My Deepest Condelences to People of Poland

That was a shocking news for me when I read on twitter that a plane carrying the Polish president and dozens of the country's top political and military leaders to the site of a Soviet massacre of Polish officers in World War II crashed in western Russia on Saturday, killing everyone on board.

President Lech Kaczynski’s plane tried to land in a thick fog, missing the runway and snagging treetops about half a mile from the airport in Smolensk, scattering chunks of fuselage across a bare forest.

The crash came as a stunning blow to Poland, wiping out a large portion of the country’s leadership in one fiery explosion. And in a chilling twist, it happened at the moment that Russia and Poland were beginning to come to terms with the killing of more than 20,000 members of Poland’s elite officer corps in the same place 70 years ago.

After read tweet about it, I search on the internet and I also send my condolences to my friend in Poland Waldemar Sieniawski and Karolina Sieniawska.

"I'm sorry to hear that your president was killed in plane crash." Karolina replied it " Thx Yangki, We're still in shock. It's very sad, because except L. Kaczyński many politicians important for our country died in this plane crash

News report stated that this plane crash killing everyone on board including Lech Kaczyński (President), Maria Kaczyńska (Wife of President Kaczyński), Ryszard Kaczorowski (Former president in exile), Jerzy Szmajdzinski (Deputy speaker of parliament), Aleksander Szczyglo (Head of the National Security Bureau), Andrzej Kremer (Deputy foreign minister), Gen. Franciszek Gagor (Army chief of staff) and Slawomir Skrzypek (President of National Bank of Poland).

I'm writing this article as my deepest condolences to the Polish. Byłem w Warszawie (I've been to Warsaw) and I'm really love this city. "I have received the news with a great shock and sadness about the death of president Lech Kaczynski, in a plane crash near to Smolensk. Seriously I don't believe it until I read detail about it. Event I don't know President Kaczynski and other passengers, I'm really sure that Poland has lost a lot of outstanding statesman in this unexpected accident. On my own behalf, I extend my deepest condolences to the friendly people of Poland at this most unfortunate and grievous loss."

Heading 391.06ppm to 350ppm CO2 Concentration in the Atmosphere

Global warming is mainly the result of CO2 levels rising in the Earth's atmosphere. Both atmospheric CO2 and other greenhouse gases. and climate change are accelerating. Climate scientists say we have years, not decades, to stabilize CO2

350 parts per million is what many scientists, climate experts, and progressive national governments are now saying is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere.

350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis--the solutions that justice demand. 350.org focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.

Report from CO2now.org stated that in 2009, the average concentration for atmospheric CO2 (Mauna Loa Observatory) was 387.35 parts per million (ppm). In 2008, it was 385.57 ppm. Since the 1958 start of precise CO2 measurements in the atmosphere, the annual mean concentration of CO2 has only increased from one year to the next.   There have been no decreases in annual CO2 levels since direct instrument measurements began. The following CO2 data provides a snapshot of the longest-running, high-precision instrument record for atmospheric CO2:

Last month, the CO2 concentration was 391.06. That means there was an increasing about 3.71ppm from last year. Here's the graphic from CO2now.org listed the CO2 concentration from March 1958 til March 2010.

Last year COP15 in Copenhagen, Denmark produce Copenhagen Accord. Article 2 in this Accord stated that "deep cuts in global emissions are required according to science" (IPCCC AR4) and agrees cooperation in peaking (stopping from rising) global and national greenhouse gas emissions "as soon as possible" and that "a low-emission development strategy is indispensable to sustainable development".

We're heading forward to achieve what scientist believe hat 350ppm is the safe CO2 concentration for human life. Reduce 391.06 to 350ppm CO2 will be a hard task, but not impossible. Bill McKibben the founder of 350.org stated that "We need to stop taking carbon out of the ground and putting it into the air. Above all, that means we need to stop burning so much coal—and start using solar and wind energy and other such sources of renewable energy –while ensuring the Global South a fair chance to develop. If we do, then the earth’s soils and forests will slowly cycle some of that extra carbon out of the atmosphere, and eventually CO2 concentrations will return to a safe level. By decreasing use of other fossil fuels, and improving agricultural and forestry practices around the world, scientists believe we could get back to 350 by mid-century. But the longer we remain in the danger zone—above 350—the more likely that we will see disastrous and irreversible climate impacts."

Kota Hijau yang Bernama Amsterdam, Bagian 1

Tulisan ini adalah bagian dari tulisan untuk kompetisi blog Kompetiblog Studi di Belanda 2010 yang diadakan oleh Nuffic Neso Indonesia dengan tema “Dutch innovation, in my opinion”.

Amsterdam yang merupakan ibukota dari Belanda merupakan kota terbesar di Belanda. Kota ini dihuni oleh sekitar 750.000 orang ini (bandingkan dengan Jakarta yang diperkirakan pada tahun 2000 berjumlah 9.72 juta jiwa).

Dengan penduduk yang kurang dari 10% penduduk Jakarta, Amsterdam berhasil menduduki peringkat 5 European Green City Index yang dikeluarkan oleh Economist Intelligence Unit yang melakukan indeksisasi tentang kota hijau di 30 kota di 30 negara di Eropa.

Pemerintah kota Amsterdam berhasil mengembangkan beberapa inovasi yang mendongkrak posisi kota ini menjadi 5 besar kota hijau di Eropa. Pada tulisan bagian 1 ini, saya akan mencoba mengembangkan tulisan ini tentang upaya pemerintah kota mengatasi masalah emisi CO2.

Emisi Karbondioksida (CO2)
Dampak dari perubahan iklim telah dirasakan oleh masyarakat global dunia, karena sifat dari perubahan iklim ini tidak hanya terkotak-kotak di suatu tempat. Dampak ini juga dirasakan oleh penduduk Amsterdam dan ini dibuktikan dengan dimana Amsterdam menduduki peringkat 12 dari total 30 kota di Eropa.

Pemerintah Amsterdam dewasa ini telah membuat target pengurangan emisi dengan mengurangi sebesar 40% emisinya pada tahun 2025 (berdasarkan tahun 1990), atau juga target ini berarti di angka 34% di tahun 2020 dan lebih tinggi dari target Uni Eropa dimana UE memasang angka 20% pengurangan emisi di tahun 2020.

Emisi per orang di Amsterdam adalah sebesar 6.66 ton per tahunnya dimana gambaran 1 ton emisi CO2 bisa dilihat di gambar berikut.

Transportasi
Belanda yang terkenal sebagai negara di bawah laut tentunya mempunyai tata kelola air dan sistem drainase yang baik. Kanal yang berada di hampir segala titik kota dijadikan sebagai salah satu sarana untuk transportasi di Amsterdam. Kesan sungai yang sangat kotor yang kita jumpai hampir di semua pelosok kota-kota besar di Indonesia seakan terbantahkan ketika kita mencoba menggunakan transportasi air di Amsterdam. Jika di Jakarta Kali Ciliwung digunakan sebagai salah satu tempat ujicoba moda transportasi air tidak berhasil karena banyaknya sampah plastik yang mengganggu kerja dari baling-baling sehingga sering macet belum lagi masalah kualitas air yang bau dan sangat hitam.

Moda transportasi lain di Amsterdam adalah transportasi umum seperti Bus, Tram, Canal Boat dan Kereta Api Lokal. Disamping moda transportasi ini, warga di Amsterdam juga gemar bersepeda atau berjalan kaki karena telah tersedia jalur sepeda sepanjang 2.8km.

Review Perjalanan COP15, Copenhagen, Denmark : Baisikeli Er Swahili for Cykel

Ini adalah bagian dari liputan perjalanan Yangki sebagai bagian dari Global South Youth Delegation participating in COP15.

COP15 yang dilaksanakan pada bulan Desember 2009 dari tanggal 7-19 menyisakan banyak cerita yang harus saya tuliskan sebagai liputan perjalanan. Pada kesempatan tersebut, saya meminjam sepeda dari sebuah organisasi sepeda yang bernama Baisikeli. Baisikeli merupakan bahasa Swahili untuk sepeda.

Henrik Mortensen merupakan salah satu anggota organisasi ini dan di sore yang telah berubah menjadi gelap (padahal masih jam 3 sore) saya berbincang-bincang dengan Henrik. Henrik sempat mengatakan bahwa "Tidak lengkap kalau ke Copenhagen jika Anda tidak bersepeda keliling kota". Dan kemudian saya mengatakan bahwa "What? suhu sekarang -2 derajat Celsius dan bersepeda?, saya akan membeku". Henrik : "Santai saja, jika Anda merasa kedinginan, tinggal bawa sepeda Anda ke Stasiun Metro atau tinggal bawa naik S-Tog, disana disediakan tempat khusus untuk sepeda".

Metro merupakan kereta cepat di kota Copenhagen tanpa masinis. Jadi seluruh jaringan Metro dikendalikan secara komputerisasi. Kereta ini beroperasi 24 jam non stop serta waktu tunggu antara 2-5 menit sesuai dengan indikator dari layar yang selalu tepat waktu. Sedangkan S-Tog adalah kereta dalam kota yang masih mempunyai masinis dan disini juga tersedia tempat untuk memarkir sepeda. Sangat-sangat nyaman sekali bersepeda di Copenhagen.

Last night we celebrate Earth Hour in Wale, Dago Atas, Bandung with some friends and also my girl. After the National Debate Competition 2010 by HIMA IESP UNPAD Day 2, Adit ask me to having a dinner in Wale, Dago Atas. We go there along with Haikal, Adit's Girl (Karina) and my girl (Shilva).

It was raining and after arrived in Wale around 8.15pm, I order Mie Ayam Rica-Rica, Mie Ayam Rica-Rica Spesial for Adit, Mie Yamin Spesial for Shilva, Haikal and Karina. While we eat our food some waitress turn of the light and when we ask them, they said "Earth Hour Mas".

Wow, Earth Hour is a big trending topic for this month. After having dinner in Wale we decided to go to Bandung Indah Plaza because there's a Night Sale. We arrived there around 10 pm and we decided to buy some items. I buy Formal Shoes and Airwalk Shoes, Shilva decided to buy clothes and a shoes, Haikal buy a Shirt and a shoes, Adit buy a shirt and Karina bough a t-shirt.

In my opinion, Earth Hour save electricity consumption for one hour. That's right. But if there's an event such as Night Sale for 3 hours started from 9pm till 12am. That just a slogan that we can save our earth. Instead of saving electricity, this would increase electricity consumption.

We back home around 00.15am and then watch English Premier League, Man United vs Bolton and the final score is 4-0 for Man United. OG, Berbatov, Berbatov and Gibson is the scorer. Glory Man United.

Ini adalah bagian dari tulisan tentang "Go Green" yang saya tulis juga di Kandank Ilmu.

Go Green seperti yang kita dengar dewasa ini seolah-olah telah menjadi jargon wajib dari setiap perusahaan dan organisasi yang berada di jalur peduli lingkungan. Suhu yang semakin memanas serta polusi membuat kita merasa gerah dengan rutinitas harian yang begitu membuat stress pikiran. Di tengah maraknya penerapan kata-kata Go Green khususnya mengenai lingkungan hidup menjadikan konsep itu sendiri menjadi salah satu strategi komunikasi banyak perusahaan, kita bisa melihat begitu banyak iklan dengan kata-kata Go Green yang dilancarkan oleh berbagai perusahaan. Kita berharapnya itu bukan hanya jargon semata demi meningkatkan pangsa pasar semata, kita berharap semakin banyak pula masyarakat yang memiliki kesadaran akan lingkungan.

Salah satu yang berhasil menumbuhkan kesadaran akan lingkungan tersebut diwujudkan oleh sekelompok orang di Gang Swadaya, Jl. Dr. Saharjo, Manggarai, Jakarta Selatan. Kandank Ilmu pada waktu lebaran mencoba mengunjungi gang tersebut untuk melihat lebih jauh tentang konsep yang mereka tawarkan.

Begitu pertama kali datang, kami disuguhkan dengan tanaman-tanaman yang begitu hijau. Perjalanan yang membuat keringat bercucuran dibayarkan dengan tanaman-tanaman yang begitu hijau dan pohon yang membuat suhu panas kota Jakarta langsung menghilang begitu masuk ke Gang Swadaya. Setiap sudut Gang Swadaya yang hijau sejuk di pandang mata.

Pada kesempatan tersebut, kami juga berhasil mewawancarai Pak Ibnu sebagai salah satu orang yang memulai langkah menghijaukan Gang Swadaya tersebut. Menurut Pak Ibnu, Go Green yang dewasa ini menjadi jargon bagi mereka telah dibuktikan terlebih dahulu. Cuap-cuap perusahaan serta pemerintah daerah lebih baik dibuktikan dengan langkah nyata menghijaukan bagian terkecil dari sebuah kota yaitunya tempat tinggal. Awalnya menanam pohon dan tumbuhan hijau ini dimulai oleh 5 orang kemudian berkembang menjadi satu area di Gang Swadaya tersebut.

Kesulitan pertama menurut Pak Ibnu adalah susahnya mengajak para tetangga untuk berpartisipasi, tetapi lama kelamaan mereka menyadari bahwa kita harus melakukan sesuatu untuk mengurangi panasnya kota Jakarta yang semakin hari semakin disesaki oleh pengunjung yang berasal dari seantaro Indonesia.

Kesulitan lainnya adalah susahnya mencari tempat menanam pohon dan tumbuhan, akhirnya tumbuhan di tanam dalam pot bekas cat dan sebagainya. Pada akhirnya, menanam pohon dan tumbuhan menjadi suatu kewajiban bagi setiap rumah tanpa ada rasa terpaksa.

Tulisan ini saya angkat berdasarkan film baru yang berjudul My Name Is Khan.

Film ini juga berhasil meraih berbagai penghargaan di UK dan juga New Zealand.

Film dimulai saat seorang anak, Rizwan Khan (Tanay Chheda), seorang muslim yang mengidap sindrom Asperger, hidup bersama ibunya (Zarina Wahab) di wilayah Borivali di Mumbai. Saat ia dewasa (Shahrukh Khan), Rizwan pindah ke San Fransisko dan hidup bersama adik dan iparnya. Selama disana, ia jatuh cinta kepada Mandira (Kajol). Mereka menikah dan memulai usaha

Setelah peristiwa 9/11, Rizwan dan Mandira mulai menghadapi beberapa kesulitan. Dimulai dari sebuah tragedi, mereka berpisah. Mandira bahkan berujar "I should never have married a Muslim man". Ingin kembali memenangkan hati istrinya, Rizwan melewati sejumlah petualangan diberbagai negara bagian di Amerika.

Hingga pada akhirnya Rizwan mendapatkan apa yang dia inginkan dan dia mengatakan "My name is Khan, and I'm not a terrorist"

Dari film ini, saya dapat memberikan gambaran bahwa hidup tidaklah selalu sama dengan apa yang kita harapkan. Tetapi kita harus dapat melakukan penyesuaian (adjustment) dengan keadaan yang terjadi. Segala macam kejadian merupakan bumbu-bumbu dari kehidupan yang akan menambah cita rasa dari perjalanan hidup ini.

Tentang Indonesian Youth Conference

Apa?

Konferensi Remaja Indonesia akan mengundang remaja Indonesia berusia 15-19 (siswa-siswi SMA/sederajat) dari seluruh Indonesia ke Jakarta. Dalam kurun waktu satu minggu, Konferensi Remaja Indonesia akan menjadi wadah bagi mereka untuk bertukar aspirasi, ide dan budaya. Mereka diharuskan untuk berbagi mengenai masalah di provinsi masing-masing, dan mencari solusi bersama-sama. Konferensi Remaja Indonesia juga akan memberikan pelatihan bagi peserta agar mereka bisa tahu lebih banyak tentang kepemimpinan, kerjasama, memperluas jaringan, media dan bagaimana caranya mengumpulkan dana – apapun yang mereka butuhkan untuk menuntaskan masalah yang terjadi di provinsi masing-masing. Di akhir minggu, seluruh peserta harus menyimpulkan sebuah deklarasi, yang akan menjadi tolak ukur bagi pemuda-pemudi Indonesia untuk “melakukan sesuatu”. Mereka juga akan merencanakan proyek sebagai bagian dari Proyek Remaja Indonesia (Indonesian Youth Projects/IYPs) dan mempresentasikan ide mereka di depan panitia dan peserta lainnya.

Mengapa?

Berdasarkan sensus pada tahun 2005, ada 40,2 juta penduduk Indonesia yang berusia 15 sampai 24 tahun, setara dengan dua kali populasi Australia atau sepuluh kali jumlah penduduk Singapura. Mengacuhkan suara empatpuluh juta orang tentu saja tidak adil. Suara anak muda harus didengar. Sebab, ada banyak remaja dengan pemikiran brilian, tersebar di penjuru nusantara, yang dapat mengedepankan perspektif segar dan solusi yang bisa saja berguna dalam menghadapi masalah-masalah nasional di abad 21.

Konferensi Remaja Indonesia bertujuan untuk menyediakan sebuah wadah bagi pemuda-pemudi Indonesia yang hebat ini, untuk berbagi aspirasi dan ide. Konferensi Remaja Indonesia memberikan kesempatan bagi suara mereka untuk didengar.

I just got an call from my senior high school friend about watching Indonesia vs Australia Live in Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan. I said "OK, I'll join".
And then, I'll go to Senayan from 5pm and arrived at 6.45pm. As you know, traffic jam is everywhere. I used BusWay from my cousin home in Manggarai and then Transit in Dukuh Atas>Tosari>Gelora Bung Karno Halte.
The ticket price only IDR 20.000
It's about 19.000 watching Indonesia vs Australia Live in Senayan.
At least Indonesia have 3 great chance to score the goals.
1st Abdul Musyafry, his shoot just neared the goal.
2nd Budi Sudarsono, his headed the ball but too weak.
3rd Budi Sudarsono, he took a long time to shoot.

BugMeNot database does have username-password combinations for most paid-subscription websites (including the WSJ) but it's tough to find one that works. Now George has a handy trick though only for geeks.

You can read any subscriber-only articles published in the Wall Street Journal newspaper (online edition) if you have Firefox ( ) and an awesome extension called Firebug (that allows inline HTML editing).

Following are the steps involved to bypass the WSJ yearly subscription wall:

Step 1: Open the Wall Street Journal story web page that you want to read but can't because it's behind the subscription firewall.

Step 2: Add the text mod=googlenews_wsj to URL immediately following the .html filename. See example below:

Step 3: Open news.google.com and press Ctrl+Shift+C - Hover the mouse over any random news headline and click once to the enter the HTML editing mode in Firebug.

Now change the link of that Google News story in the Firebug window to the one we created in Step 2. [change the "href" attribute of "a" tag] Press enter.

Click the modified link on the Google News homepage and you'll immediately get access to the full article on WSJ, not just the two-para summary.

Upload Video Clips to Flickr In Bulk Using Flickr Uploader

While you can upload videos onto Flickr in bulk from the browser, a better option is their desktop based Flickr Uploadr software - recommended when you have multiple videos to upload or the size of individual videos is very large.

There are some extra advantages. With Flickr Uploadr, you can attach tags, titles and descriptions to all your videos, as well as set privacy options. And the software works in parallel meaning you can prepare a second set of videos for uploading while the previous one is still getting uploaded onto Flickr.

Flickr Uploadr software, currently available on the Flickr tools page, doesn’t include support for videos but there’s a new official version (v3.1) that allows uploading of photos as well as videos. Here are the download links.

Say you come across an interesting photograph or screenshot image on Wikipedia that you would like to save in your Flickr account. How would you do this ?

Shiyan has developed a simple Flickr Uploadr for Firefox that lets you send web pictures directly to your Flickr account without you having to download that image to the hard-drive.

Image attribution can be a issue here but it’s also useful if you like to backup photos from places like Picasa, PhotoBucket, Facebook, etc to Flickr.

The add-in is Firefox only but there’s something similar for desktop in the form of Flickr Uploadr (video version here).

This will adds a "Send to Flickr" command to the contextual menu and lets you upload desktop pictures to the web with a simple right click.

Upload PDF Documents to Scribd with a Simple Right Click

Scribd, as most of us know is a hugely popular service for uploading and sharing Microsoft Office documents or PDF ebook online. Scribd can also convert documents to Flash files which can then be embedded in web pages.

The other good point about Scribd is that you don't require an account in order to upload or convert documents into other formats like PDF, Flash Paper or MP3.

To upload documents to Scribd, you can either use their browser based uploader tool but what about documents that are already on the web ? Would you save them to your hard drive for uploading to Scribd ?

One of the option is to use the Slurping feature where you append the URL of your web document to the following URL and it gets copied on Scribed automatically.

If that sounds confusing, get this new Firefox extension called Scribd Slurper - say you come a PDF document in Google search that you want to save on scribd - just right click that search result and select "Slurp to Scribd" in the contextual menu. Give a title, some tags and you're done.

Even if you don't use Scribd for sharing or storing documents, this is useful when the Google cache cannot render the PDF document properly - view the file inside Scribd - it will be much convenient than downloading the file locally and viewing it Adobe Reader or Foxit.

Bonus Tip: Use filetype:pdf with your Google search queries to limit the search to Adobe PDF documents.

Gmail has this nice feature where you can open PDF files and Office documents directly in your Google Docs account bypassing the need of any desktop software like Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Office.

If you find this Gmail feature handy, you’ll probably also enjoy using the "Send to Google Docs" extension for Firefox.

This extension (download link) lets you read online documents directly in your Google Docs account with a simple right click (see screenshot).

It works with popular file formats like PDF, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and all Open Document formats. "Send to Docs" can also import HTML web pages in Google Docs provided they have the right extension.

You right click any document link on the web, choose "Send to Google Docs" from the context menu and the file will immediately open as a Google Document. The file also gets saved permanently in your Google Docs account.

I’ll distribute this add-on directly from the Firefox official site once it gets approved by the Mozilla team. Similar ‘direct web uploaders’ already exist for Scribd and Flickr.

BlackBerry Guide for Power Users - Do More With Your BlackBerry

A BlackBerry smartphone definitely makes you more productive but there’s a small learning curve involved.

If you don’t have the time to read manuals, here’s a quick overview of some great time-saving features, tips and lesser known keyboard shortcuts that will help you do things quickly and more efficiently with your BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Guide for Power Users - Take full advantage of your BlackBerry smartphone.

Close vs Escape - If you are running a browser or playing a game in your BlackBerry and press the "End Call" key, the application does not get closed but is merely hidden from your view. Too many open applications will soon slow down your BlackBerry so make it a habit to close, not escape.

See What’s Running - To see a list of all open applications in your Blackberry, press the ALT key followed by Escape. It’s pretty much like doing an Alt+Tab in Windows to help you navigate through open applications or switch from one application to another.

Save Web Pages - When you come across an interesting webpage but have no time reading it, you would normally send a link of that page as an email to yourself. To save time, simply open the menu of your BlackBerry internet browser and select “Save Page” – that page will be added to your message list just like other emails. This is like a built-in clipping tool.

Type URLs and Email Addresses Quickly - When typing a web address (URL) in the Blackberry browser, type a space and it is written as a dot. To insert a slash(/), use Shift+Space. When typing email addresses, your first space is recognized as @ while subsequent spaces are recognized as dots. So labnol google co uk will be written as labnol@google.co.uk.

Delete Your Emails – If you are looking to clean your BlackBerry Inbox, press the CAPS key and scroll UP or DOWN using the wheel to select the email messages that you want to delete. If you want to completely clear the Inbox, press t in the Message view to move to the top and select “Delete Prior” – this will delete all your BlackBerry emails.

Signal Strength – While your BlackBerry will display the current signal strength as bars on the homescreen, hold down the ALT key and type NMLL – the bars will convert into real numbers indicating the exact strength in that area. Repeat the same keystrokes to switch to bar mode again.

Multiple Email Signatures – By default, BlackBerry will append a text signature to all your outgoing email messages that you have set through the BlackBerry Internet Services portal. If you like more personalized signatures, compose a new email message in your BlackBerry, go to “Edit Auto-Text” and set up multiple entries corresponding to your different signatures.

BlackBerry Clipboard – If you are looking to copy text from an email message and save that as a note, position your cursor in the email, hold the Shift key (left Caps) and roll the trackwheel. When you are done selecting, click the trackwheel to put that selection onto the clipboard. BlackBerry Internet Explorer has a special Select Mode to help you copy-paste text from web pages.

Convert Case without the CAPS key – When writing an email message, hold down the key of any letter for a slightly longer duration and it will automatically turn into a capital letter. To type an accent or a special character (like a => à), hold the letter key and roll the trackwheel.

Stop Receiving Sent Emails - Every time you send an email from BlackBerry, you get a copy in your Inbox. To prevent this, setup a BlackBerry Filter.

Web Applications – Blackberry software like Twitter, Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo! Go, Google Talk, NewsGator, Picasa, etc. offer great experiences but they could drain the battery of your BlackBerry since these applications are constantly checking for updates in the background.

You may therefore want to switch to “manual updates” especially when running low on battery.

HTML Email - The current BlackBerry OS supports only text emails but the good news is the BlackBerry OS 4.5, due in few months, will support HTML email, YouTube and editing of Microsoft Office documents. Until then, you can buy the BlackBerry email viewers either from BSmart or Empower.

Erase Everything - If you are looking to sell your Blackberry phone or planning to exchange an old model with an upcoming version (like the BlackBerry 9000), it is a good idea to completely erase all your BlackBerry data. For that, go to Options -> Security Options -> General Settings and choose “Wipe Handheld” from the menu.

Prolong the Battery Life – You can set BlackBerry to completely shut down at a specific time and it will automatically wake up with the alarm (or any other time) - note that you won’t be able to receive phone calls when the phone is switched off so don’t turn off the device too early. Move Around Web Pages Quickly - If you are reading a long (or very wide) web page, switch to the Page View mode that shows a view of the full website - use the scrollwheel to quickly navigate to any other area.

Screen Capture - There’s no inbuilt screen capture application in a BlackBerry so I use Mobiola Screen Capture that can capture still images as well as a video of your BlackBerry activity. Another option is SnapScreen that is cheaper but offers only still screenshots. The BlackBerry developers toolkit also has a screenshot application that you can have for free.

If you see that ‘key icon’ next to a story, that means you only read a preview of that article and the full article will become available only after you login. Let’s see how you can bypass this:

You can do lot of interesting stuff with Google Talk like get alert notifications, save bookmarks to delicious, manage web calendars, set reminders, write blogs, and so much more.

Such features can be easily integrated into Google Talk through ‘bots’ which, in simple English, are like virtual friends who are online 24×7 and will always respond with a smile to your questions or requests.

Here are the eleven most useful ‘bots’ that transform Google Talk into a more useful program:

1. imfeeds@gmail.com - Add this IM Feeds bot as your Google Talk buddy and you’ll be able to read any blog or website that syndicates content via RSS feeds.

To subscribe to a website in GTalk, simply send a new IM message that says "sub labnol.org" where labnol.org is the site address that you want to read inside Google Talk.

2. friendfeed@bot.im - This secret bot lets you post to FriendFeed from Google Talk. You may submit either hyperlinks or text messages.

3. imified@imified.com - This imified bot turns Google Talk into a real powerhouse.

You can post bookmarks to delicious, send messages to Twitter, submit blog entries to WordPress, Tumblr or Blogger, manage events in Google Calendar, shorten long URLs, run whois and so on.

When it comes to web search, Windows Live stands a distant third behind Google and Yahoo!.

There are however are some lesser-known features in Live Search that aren’t just useful, you won’t find them in any of the other popular search engines. Let’s take a look:

1. Watch Video Preview in Search Results

When you hover the mouse over any of the thumbnail images appearing in Live Video Search, it will automatically play a short preview of the video so you have a good idea about the clip without visiting the target website where that video is hosted.

As you may have noticed in the screencast above, this video preview feature is available for all clip indexed by Live Search whether they are on YouTube, MySpace, CNN or ABC News.

2. Find Web Pages That Link to Documents, MP3s, Videos, ZIPs ..

The contains: operator is Live Search lets you find web pages that link to other online documents and multimedia files like music and video. This is very different from Google’s filetype: search operator (also available in Live Search) which looks for content inside PDF and Office documents.

For example, if you are looking to download a Microsoft Word report from Gartner site that is about elearning, just type: "elearning site:gartner.com contains:doc"

Similarly, if you like to find all pages on Wikipedia that link to MP3 files, type "site:wikipedia.org contains:mp3"

Another example - to learn about software that you can download from the Google website, use "site:google.com contains:zip OR contains:exe"

3. Save Images & Pictures As Your Search the Web

Live Image Search includes something called a scratch pad that lets you save collection of images with a simple drag-n-drop. This comes very handy if you are searching for images using different keywords and need to shortlist only a few from that large collection.

4. Get Live Search Results as RSS Feeds

While there are external services that let you subscribe to search results via RSS feeds, neither Yahoo! nor Google provide RSS feeds of their search results.

You can however subscribe to search pages from Windows Live as RSS feed via this undocumented hack. Open Live Search, type your query and then on the results page, appened "&format=rss" to the URL. See example:

5. Limit Your Search to Website that offer RSS Feeds

Another interesting search operator in Live Search is "hasfeed" - it lets you find only those web pages that link to RSS feeds. For instance, you could say "micheal phelps hasfeed:" to find web pages that are about "michael phelps" and also syndicate content as RSS feeds.

You can group hasfeed: with other search operators so if want to know about all pages related to movies on ABC website that have feeds, just type "movies site:abc.com hasfeed:"

6. Specify Weight (Preference) in the Search Query

Say you are planning for an upcoming vacation and need some advice related to holiday destinations. Now rather than searching for "holiday destinations" that will return very broad results, you could add the prefer: operator and specify places that you’re really keen to visit though you don’t mind other suggestions.

DEALTALK-Trimex may soon make play for Indonesia's Bumi

SINGAPORE, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Trimex, a Middle East investment vehicle, may throw its hat into the ring for control of Indonesia's top coal miner PT Bumi Resources Tbk, after a private equity firm reportedly scaled back its ambitions to acquire the miner. Private equity firm Northstar Pacific may buy only 10-20 percent of Bumi, rather than a recently agreed 35 percent stake, a business newspaper said on Thursday, citing Northstar's chief, opening the door for other investors. A source close to Trimex Group said the company has received details on the Bumi (BUMI.JK: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) deal through several channels and was examining options.

"In the light of recent developments, Bumi is fast running out of options. One potential source of funds is investors in the Middle East, who have been active in injecting funds into Citi and Barclays," the source said.

No one at Trimex was available for comment, but in the past it has tended to opt for majority stakes.

Bumi's owner, debt-laden conglomerate Bakrie & Brothers (BNBR.JK: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), said on Nov. 1 it would sell 35 percent of the miner to Northstar for $1.3 billion, but details remain sketchy and Bumi's shares have since slumped, prompting speculation Northstar may back out or try to pay less.

Bumi is the crown jewel of the Bakrie group, whose interests stretch from property to palm oil. But the group borrowed heavily using Bumi shares as collateral, forcing it to look for a sale when the shares fell as the commodities' bubble deflated.

Trimex, through a joint-venture company RAK Minerals and Metals Investments and backed by one of the United Arab Emirates, committed $1.5 billion to Indonesian investments earlier this year.

Bumi was Indonesia's most valuable listed firm briefly in June, but its price has since fallen 87 percent, though the stock has risen this week as investor focus returned to the bid.

Smaller local mining rival PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA.JK: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), said earlier this week it was pulling out of the Northstar-led group buying the Bumi stake, blaming deteriorating share and credit markets.

Philippine conglomerate San Miguel Corp (SMCB.PS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) has said it plans a rival bid for 51 percent of Bumi, but has not said how much it would offer.

Bumi, which has announced plans to spend more than $700 million on a share buyback, was briefly the biggest firm by market capitalisation on the Indonesian bourse when its share price peaked in June at 8,750 rupiah.

Analysis: Is the central bank (BI) interest rate still central?

Bank Indonesia's policy rate may be close to being rendered defunct. But capital restrictions introduced recently appear to be a step in the right direction.

Nowadays, new realities emerge by the hour. The economics of the world today work very differently compared to say a year, month or even a week ago. And many of the challenges we're facing now (of which most are not for the better) are unfortunately here to stay.

The break in connection between policy rates, money market rates and bank lending rates is just one of those many challenges.

For example, in the United States, the overnight policy rate of the Federal Funds has been brought down to 1 percent, from around 5 percent when the mortgage crisis first emerged in 2007. Yet the rates at which banks charge each other for short term borrowing, as indicated by LIBOR, remain unusually elevated up to today.

And the 30-year mortgage rate, a proxy for bank lending rates in general, remains stubbornly high.

Indonesia's economic fundamentals contrast markedly (in a positive way) when compared to the United States. However the global economic turmoil has had far-reaching implications, and signs of a similar disconnect between policy rates and bank rates are also emerging here at home.

Why should we be concerned about this? Policymakers, or particularly central banks, have very few instruments at their disposal to counter an economic downturn. Interest rates are often the main tool of the trade. So if they don't work like they're supposed to, impending economic downturns could easily become more protracted.

Since July, the commodity price bubble has popped and the rupiah has depreciated significantly along with other emerging market currencies. This has been accompanied by a variety of complications.

What started out as an environment of tight liquidity and rising interest rates as a result of strong loans growth has now evolved into an atmosphere of increased wariness among banks -- even domestic ones.

BI's move to lower statutory reserve requirements last month from 9 percent to 5 percent made available a substantial amount of liquidity. But contrary to many expectations, the move did little to jump-start interbank lending activity and bring down deposit rates.

For many banks, in-house limits on interbank lending are still kept on a leash, and preference is currently on having huge amounts of liquidity at one's disposal. This is evident when looking at the higher than usual daily balances in BI's very short term/overnight deposit facility.

Banks have also become wary of making longer term placements, even at BI. The one-month SBI rate continues to rise compared to the overnight policy rate. The spread between the two is now at over 1.6 percentage points, compared to just 0.25 percentage points last June.

Meanwhile, interest rates on customer deposits remain high amid fears of capital flight, be it a move of deposits among domestic banks, or a move away from local currency deposits.

It is worth noting that the latter is a function of exchange rate volatility. High net worth depositors are usually more aware about the real value of their deposits. So as the currency weakens, a higher interest rate is needed to prevent them from going for the dollar.

As incoming data points to a potentially substantial impact from the global turmoil, the government and central bank are now under pressure to act decisively to counter the forthcoming economic downturn.

They were probably right to lift their foot off the breaks last week by ending their wave of policy rate hikes. But the issue now is on whether or not there is power when they start flooring the pedal.

If current conditions persist, the time it takes for policy rate cuts to affect real sector economic activity could be much longer than usual. And the central bank may finally find out that it has lost its grip on the real economy.

There are a couple of measures that could be taken in anticipation of this. The good thing is that one had already been introduced last week, as the central bank put in place restrictions on speculative foreign currency purchases.

These restrictions should help in curbing resident capital flight, which we suspect have been increasingly responsible for the latest episodes of currency market turbulence.

However restrictions alone are not enough. The government should go further by abolishing the Rp 2 billion size limit on guaranteed deposits. It may also be a good idea to extend the guarantee to cover interbank placements.

All this needs to be done fast. In times of crisis, we may well be better off overreacting, rather than find ourselves trying helplessly to climb up after a long fall.

Rupiah still on shaky footing against dollar

The rupiah continued its fall against the U.S. dollar Thursday as dollar demand rose at a time when many preferred the greenback to a lack of confidence in the local currency.

The rupiah slid to 12,475 per dollar, its weakest level since August 1998, before trading at 12,300 at 5:10 p.m. here in Jakarta, according to Bloomberg. It was traded at 12,100 per dollar at 5:02 p.m. on Wednesday.

The currency has dropped by more than 20 percent in the past month.

Currency analyst Farial Anwar said the rupiah fell as foreign and local investors were losing confidence in the rupiah.

"They who hold money may choose to buy dollars. Or perhaps they think it is more beneficial to hold dollars."

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati says the rupiah has devalued as people have held onto dollars due to a lack of confidence in other currencies.

"The problem now is not a shortage of liquidity (in dollars), but it reflects instead that there are people who do not want to trade because of a lack of confidence (in other currencies)."

The central bank has said it will maintain the rupiah at a "realistic level".

As of Oct. 31, foreign exchange reserves stood at $50.58 billion, down from $57.11 billion a month earlier, as the central bank has been active in supporting the rupiah to prevent it from a further or deeper fall.

The central bank has also introduced a regulation to limit the purchase of foreign currencies in the equivalent of above $100,000 through spot, forward, or derivative transactions for Indonesian citizens, or for firms, by requiring that they provide underlying transactions and a tax file number.

Foreign parties, meanwhile, can purchase that amount of dollars through spot transactions only, subject to supplying the justifying documentation.

Farial expects the central bank to impose a tight monitoring on the implementation of the regulation to avoid that currency speculators might forge documents to substantiate underlying transactions.

"The central bank needs to control the regulation and sanction those violating it."

Exporters should also bring their dollars into Indonesia, instead of parking them in other countries, he added. "Even state-run companies have been asked by the government to bring their dollars here."

Businesses however said the rupiah decline had not posed a threat to businesses as they had calculated the rupiah at about 12,000 per dollar for imports.

"(The rupiah decline) has been predicted," said Sofjan Wanandi, the chairman of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo), adding however that businesses would be severely hit if the rupiah reached 15,000 per dollar.

Kemilau Nusantara 2008

"Kemilau Nusantara" is an annual event held by the office culture and tourism of Indonesia and the takes place in West Java, In front of Gedung Sate.

In 2008, I got the opportunity to attend the "Kemilau Nusantara 2008" event.

At this event, there are also my friends from economics department. There is Mas Boy, Jogi, Cumut, Lita.

First day on Boston, we go to Prudential Center

Here we are, first day in Boston. We arrived at 5.00 pm and the doorman told me "There will snow tonight".
After take a shower, we go to Prudential Center around 7.00 pm. We have dinner with Boston's
Indonesian student We go there by Subway and we buy a ticket in Arlington Station..
